WHAT IS DEPRESSION?

Depression is a common but serious mental health condition that can affect your mood, energy, sleep, motivation, relationships, and daily life. It is more than feeling sad or having a hard week. Depression can feel persistent and difficult to manage without support, but it is treatable.

What are the signs of depression?

Depression can affect the way you feel, think, and function in daily life. Signs may include ongoing sadness, loss of interest, low energy, changes in sleep or appetite, difficulty concentrating, feelings of hopelessness or guilt, or pulling away from others. Some people also experience irritability, emotional numbness, or thoughts of not wanting to be here.

TYPES OF DEPRESSION

Depression is not the same for everyone. Some people experience symptoms during a specific season of life, while others live with depression that is more persistent, severe, or difficult to treat. Understanding the type of depression someone may be experiencing can help guide the next step in care.

Major Depressive Disorder

Major Depressive Disorder is one of the most common forms of depression. It can involve ongoing symptoms such as low mood, loss of interest, fatigue, sleep changes, difficulty concentrating, and feelings of hopelessness. These symptoms can significantly affect all areas of life.

Treatment-Resistant Depression

Treatment-Resistant Depression may be considered when depression symptoms have not improved enough after trying standard treatment options, such as medication or therapy. For some patients, this may mean it is time to explore advanced treatment options such as SPRAVATO®, TMS, IV ketamine, or VNS when clinically appropriate.

Postpartum Depression

Postpartum depression can occur after pregnancy and may affect mood, anxiety, bonding, sleep, energy, and daily functioning. It is more than the “baby blues” and can feel overwhelming without support.

Persistent Depressive Disorder

Persistent Depressive Disorder, sometimes called dysthymia, is a longer-lasting form of depression. Symptoms may feel less intense than Major Depressive Disorder, but can continue over time and affect mood, energy, motivation, self-esteem, and daily life.

Seasonal Depression

Seasonal depression, often called Seasonal Affective Disorder, is a type of depression that tends to occur during certain times of year, most commonly in the fall or winter. Symptoms may include low mood, fatigue, changes in sleep, low motivation, and loss of interest in usual activities.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

When should I seek help for depression?

You can seek help for depression at any point. You do not have to wait until symptoms feel severe or unmanageable to reach out for support.

Depression can affect your mood, energy, sleep, motivation, relationships, work, and daily life. If you have been feeling off, overwhelmed, disconnected, or unlike yourself, talking with a mental health provider can help you better understand what you are experiencing and what options may be available.

At The Remedy Mental Health, we provide depression treatment in Minneapolis, St. Paul, Vadnais Heights, Golden Valley, Hudson, Burnsville, Maple Grove, Eau Claire, and Rapid City. We provide therapy, psychiatric medication management, and advanced treatment options when appropriate. Our goal is to help you find the right next step for your care.

How do I know it's time to try medication for my depression?

It may be time to consider medication for depression if your symptoms are not improving, are getting worse, or are making it harder to get through daily life.

Medication may also be an option if therapy, lifestyle changes, or other support have not been enough. You do not have to wait until depression feels severe to ask about medication. A psychiatric provider can help you understand your options and decide what next step feels right for you.

At The Remedy Mental Health, we offer psychiatric medication management for depression in Minnesota, Wisconsin, and South Dakota, along with therapy and advanced treatment options when appropriate.

What is the next step if depression medications are not working?

If depression medications are not working, the next step is to talk with a mental health provider about your symptoms, medication history, dosage, side effects, and how long you have been taking the medication. Sometimes the next step may be adjusting the dose, trying a different medication, adding therapy, or exploring other treatment options.

If you have tried multiple depression medications without enough relief, you may be experiencing treatment-resistant depression. This does not mean you are out of options. It may mean it is time to look at a different approach, including advanced depression treatments when appropriate.

At The Remedy Mental Health, we offer advanced psychiatric options for things like treatment-resistant depression or major depressive disorder.  Options such as Spravato®, IV ketamine, dTMS, and VNS when clinically appropriate.

What other options are there for depression treatment, outside of medication management?

There are several treatment options for depression outside of medication. Many people benefit from therapy, lifestyle support, stress management, improved sleep habits, movement, and building stronger support systems.

For some people, especially when depression has not improved with standard treatment, advanced options may also be considered. These may include treatments such as TMS, Spravato®, IV ketamine, or VNS when clinically appropriate.

The right option depends on your symptoms, history, goals, and what you have already tried. A mental health provider can help you understand which depression treatment options may be the best fit for your care.

What happens at my first appointment?

Your first appointment may take place through telehealth or in person, depending on your location, provider availability, and the type of care you are seeking.

During your first appointment, your provider will take time to learn more about you, your symptoms, your health history, and what you are hoping to get help with. They may ask about your mood, sleep, energy, medications, past treatment, and any concerns you have.

This first visit is also a time to talk through your options and create a care plan that fits your needs. Depending on your symptoms and goals, your plan may include therapy, medication management, advanced treatment options, or a combination of support.

The goal of the first appointment is to help you feel heard, better understand what you are experiencing, and leave with a clearer next step.

Are your depression treatment options covered by insurance?

Many depression treatment options may be covered by insurance, but coverage depends on your insurance plan, provider, location, and the type of treatment recommended.

Depression care may include therapy, psychiatric medication management, or advanced treatment options when clinically appropriate. Some treatments may require prior authorization or additional insurance review before starting.

Our team can help review your insurance information and talk through next steps so you have a clearer understanding of your coverage before beginning care.
