A CLEARER PATH TO ADHD CARE

UNDERSTANDING ADHD AND YOUR NEXT STEP

When ADHD symptoms are affecting your daily life, getting clarity can be an important first step. The Remedy Mental Health provides ADHD screening and medication management for patients across Minnesota, Wisconsin, and South Dakota, helping people better understand concerns with focus, organization, impulsivity, follow-through, and daily functioning through personalized psychiatric care.

WHAT IS ADHD?

Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, or ADHD, is a mental health condition that can affect how a person manages attention, activity level, impulses, organization, and daily responsibilities. While ADHD is often associated with childhood, many people continue to experience symptoms into adulthood, and some adults may not recognize ADHD until later in life.

What are the signs of ADHD?

Signs of ADHD may include difficulty staying focused, trouble completing tasks, forgetfulness, disorganization, restlessness, impulsivity, or challenges with time management. ADHD can also affect motivation, emotional regulation, relationships, work, school, and daily routines. Because these symptoms can overlap with anxiety, depression, trauma, sleep issues, and stress, ADHD screening can help provide a clearer understanding of what may be contributing to your symptoms.

PRESENTATIONS OF ADHD

ADHD is not the same for everyone. Some people experience more difficulty with attention, organization, and follow-through, while others struggle more with restlessness, impulsivity, or trouble slowing down. Understanding how ADHD symptoms show up in daily life can help guide the next step in care.

Inattentive ADHD

Inattentive ADHD may involve difficulty staying focused, following through on tasks, staying organized, remembering details, or managing time. People with this presentation may feel easily distracted, mentally scattered, or overwhelmed by responsibilities. This is the presentation many people used to refer to as ADD.

Hyperactive/ Impulsive ADHD

Hyperactive/impulsive ADHD may involve restlessness, difficulty sitting still, interrupting, acting quickly without thinking, or feeling like it is hard to slow down. In adults, hyperactivity may feel less like constant movement and more like internal restlessness, racing thoughts, or difficulty relaxing.

Combined ADHD

Combined ADHD includes symptoms of both inattentive and hyperactive/impulsive ADHD. Someone with combined ADHD may struggle with focus, organization, impulsivity, restlessness, and follow-through.

ADHD Testing vs. Neuropsych testing

The Remedy Mental Health provides ADHD screening and psychiatric evaluation, but we do not offer full neuropsychological testing.

ADHD screening may include a review of your symptoms, medical and mental health history, current functioning, and standardized screening tools when appropriate. This process can help determine whether ADHD may be part of what you are experiencing and whether medication or other treatment options may be helpful.

Full neuropsychological testing is a more extensive evaluation that may be needed for school accommodations, workplace documentation, learning disorders, disability paperwork, or complex diagnostic questions. If that level of testing is needed, we may recommend connecting with a neuropsychologist or psychologist who provides comprehensive testing.

What are TREATMENT OPTIONS FOR ADHD?

ADHD treatment at The Remedy Mental Health may include psychiatric evaluation, medication management, therapy, and support for co-occurring mental health concerns. When clinically appropriate, medication options may be discussed as part of a personalized care plan. Our team also considers whether anxiety, depression, trauma, sleep issues, stress, or other concerns may be affecting focus, organization, motivation, or daily functioning.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Do you offer ADHD testing?

The Remedy Mental Health offers ADHD screening and psychiatric evaluation, but we do not provide full neuropsychological testing. If you need formal testing for school accommodations, disability documentation, or complex learning concerns, we may recommend a referral to a neuropsychologist or psychologist.

Can you prescribe ADHD medication?

Yes. When clinically appropriate, our psychiatric providers can discuss ADHD medication options. Your provider will review your symptoms, history, health needs, and treatment goals before recommending medication.

Can adults get diagnosed with ADHD?

Yes. Many adults recognize ADHD symptoms later in life, especially when work, school, parenting, relationships, or daily responsibilities become harder to manage. ADHD can look different in adults than it does in children, which is why a thoughtful evaluation is important.

What if my focus problems are caused by depression and anxiety?

Difficulty focusing can happen with ADHD, anxiety, depression, trauma, sleep problems, stress, and other mental health concerns. Your provider will help assess what may be contributing to your symptoms, so your treatment plan is based on the full picture.

What happens at my first appointment?

Your first appointment may take place through telehealth or in person, depending on your location, provider availability, and the type of care you are seeking.

During your first appointment, your provider will take time to learn more about you, your symptoms, your health history, and what you are hoping to get help with. They may ask about your mood, sleep, energy, medications, past treatment, and any concerns you have.

This first visit is also a time to talk through your options and create a care plan that fits your needs. Depending on your symptoms and goals, your plan may include ADHD screening, medication management, therapy, or support for co-occurring mental health concerns.

The goal of the first appointment is to help you feel heard, better understand what you are experiencing, and leave with a clearer next step.

Will my insurance cover the screening and treatment?

Many ADHD treatment options may be covered by insurance, but coverage depends on your insurance plan, provider, location, and the type of treatment recommended.

Our team can help review your insurance information and talk through next steps so you have a clearer understanding of your coverage before beginning care.

Is ADD different from ADHD?

ADD is an older term that is no longer used as an official diagnosis. Today, ADHD is the clinical term used to describe attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, including symptoms that are mostly inattentive, mostly hyperactive or impulsive, or a combination of both. People who were once told they had ADD may now be described as having ADHD, inattentive presentation.
