Vagal Nerve Stimulation (VNS) is an advanced treatment option approved by the FDA for individuals with treatment-resistant depression. This innovative therapy targets and stimulates the vagus nerve, a key component of the body’s autonomic nervous system — offering hope to individuals who have not found relief through traditional treatments.
The vagus nerve, also known as the “wandering nerve,” is the longest cranial nerve in the body. It plays a crucial role in regulating various bodily functions, including heart rate, digestion, and mood. It is connected to several regions in the brain that are involved in mood regulation, making it a prime target for treating depression.
During VNS treatment at our greater Minneapolis clinics, a small pacemaker-like device is implanted beneath the skin on the chest wall. This device, which is not visible, delivers mild electrical pulses to the vagus nerve, stimulating it to send signals to the brain. These signals help regulate mood and reduce symptoms of depression over time.
VNS has shown significant benefits in improving depression, reducing suicidal ideation and enhancing overall quality of life. This therapy offers hope to individuals who have not responded to traditional depression treatments.
VNS is approved for adults aged 18 or older who have severe depression and have not responded to four or more adequate depression treatments, such as medications, therapy, transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS), and Ketamine.
